The parts of a bra are the band, the cups, the centre gore, the straps, the underwire, the wings, the cradle, the apex and the hook-and-eye closure — plus one part that isn't on the bra at all: your own breast root. That's the whole list. Ten names, and once you have them you can say exactly what's wrong instead of "it just feels off."

A bra is really two systems bolted together. The support system — band, wings, cradle, underwire and hook-and-eye — wraps your ribcage and takes the weight. The shaping system — cups, centre gore, straps and apex — sits on top and decides where your breast tissue goes.

That split explains almost every fit complaint in one line: when the shaping parts are asked to do the support parts' job, things dig, slip and ride up. Fitters generally credit the band with roughly 80–90% of a bra's support. We'd rather be straight with you about that number — it's long-standing industry consensus rather than a lab measurement — but the direction of travel isn't in doubt. The straps get whatever is left.

One more thing worth knowing before we start. Breasts contain no muscle. They're fat and glandular tissue held by the skin and the Cooper's ligaments underneath. Nothing inside is holding them up for you, which is why the engineering of the band matters so much — and why a bra only changes your shape while you're wearing it. What is the bra band?

The bra band is the loop of fabric that goes all the way around your ribcage — under the cups, along your sides, and around your back to the hooks. It is the most important part of the whole garment, and almost nobody is told so.

You know how a heavy shopping bag works? The flat base under the bag carries the weight; the handles just stop it tipping over. Carry a full bag by the handles alone and they cut red lines into your fingers within a minute. Your band is the base. Your straps are the handles. That's the whole principle, and it's why bra bands are cut from firm, gripping elastic while straps are soft and adjustable. What it looks like when it's working: the band sits level all the way around, front and back at the same height. Quick test: slide two fingers under it — they should go in with a little tension, and no more. Raise your arms; a good band stays put.

What goes wrong: the band stretches out, or was too big to begin with. Then it creeps up your back, the front drops, and the straps quietly take over a job they were never built for. What is a longline bra?

A longline bra is a bra with an extended band that runs down the ribcage instead of stopping just below the wire. Most add roughly 3–8 cm of extra fabric underneath; bustier styles go further.

The point is pressure. The same weight spread over a taller band means less force on every square centimetre, so it's less likely to cut in or roll. Longline bras also smooth the line under fitted clothing, and the wider base resists riding up. That's why they come up so often as a recommendation at larger cup sizes — not because they're "more supportive" in some magical way, but because a bigger footprint is a steadier one.

The trade-off is honest: more fabric is warmer, which matters in humid weather, and a longline band can dig at the bottom edge if you're short through the torso. Try before you commit.

What are bra cups?

The cups are the two shaped pockets that hold and position your breast tissue. They can be moulded from a single piece of foam, cut from two or three seamed panels, padded, lined, or barely there at all. Their job is containment and shape — not support.

Picture pouring water into a glass. The right glass holds it neatly; a glass that's too small brims over the rim no matter how carefully you pour. A cup that's too small doesn't reduce anything — it just displaces tissue, over the top, out the sides, or under the arm. That's the mechanism behind spillage, and it's a maths problem, not a body problem. What it looks like when it's working: the cup is smooth. No spillage over the top edge, no wrinkling or gaping, no gap when you press a finger into the fabric.

What goes wrong: too small and tissue escapes; too big and the cup collapses into folds. One sanity check people forget — cup letters are relative to the band, so a B cup on a 30 band holds far less than a B cup on a 38. The letter only means something standing next to its number.

That lettering system is younger than you'd think. Early bras came in small, medium and large, which fitted almost nobody. In 1932, the American maternity-wear company S. H. Camp & Company began labelling cups A through D to describe volume — and the alphabet on your label today descends directly from that decision. Nearly a century on, it's still the most useful idea in bra sizing.

What is the centre gore?

The centre gore is the small panel of fabric that joins the two cups at the front, resting against your breastbone. In American spelling you'll see it written "center gore"; some sewing patterns call it the bridge. Same part.

It has three jobs: separate the cups, anchor the front of the bra to your body, and hold the cups at the right angle. It's tiny, and it's one of the fastest fit signals on the whole garment.

What it looks like when it's working: flat and flush against your chest. Press a fingertip on it and there should be no gap to push through. Gore height varies by style — plunge bras have a low, narrow one, full-cup bras a tall one — and neither is better. They just suit different breast spacing.

What goes wrong: the gore floats off your chest, tenting forward. Nine times out of ten that isn't the gore's fault at all: the cup is too small and your tissue is pushing the panel away, or the band is too loose and the whole front has lifted. What is the strap of a bra?

The strap of a bra runs from the top of the cup, over your shoulder, and down to the back of the band. Most are adjustable through a small ring and slider. Their job is positioning: they set the height of the cups and stop them tipping forward when you lean.

Now the misconception that costs more women more comfort than anything else on this page.

"If my bra isn't supporting me, I should tighten the straps." It's a completely reasonable thing to believe — the straps are the adjustable bit, so they look like the volume knob. They aren't. Tightening the straps doesn't add support; it transfers load onto two narrow lines of shoulder skin, which is why you end up with red trenches and an ache between your shoulder blades by four in the afternoon. Go back to the shopping bag: shortening the handles doesn't make the bag lighter, it just concentrates the same weight into a smaller patch of your hand. The weight has to go somewhere, and a bra is built to send it into the band around your ribs, where a far larger area of your torso can carry it. If your bra isn't holding you up, the band is too loose or too worn out. Fix the band first, then set the straps.

What it looks like when it's working: snug, but you can slide a finger underneath. No dents in your shoulders when you take the bra off.

Strap types: front-fastening, convertible, double and long

Not every bra with straps uses the same arrangement, and the naming trips people up:

  • Standard adjustable straps — vertical at the front, angled in at the back, shortened by a ring and slider. The default, and fine for most people.
  • A bra with straps in front (front-fastening or front-closure) — the hooks or clasp sit between the cups instead of at your back. Much easier to fasten if reaching behind you is painful or awkward, and the back is left as one clean panel. The trade-off: that fastening is usually fixed, so you lose the row-by-row band adjustment you'd get at the back.
  • Convertible straps — they unclip at the cup or the back so you can wear them crossed, halter, or over one shoulder. Useful, but every extra clip is another place a strap can slip.
  • Double-strap styles — a bra with a double strap splits the load across two thinner bands per shoulder instead of one, or adds a decorative second strap for looks. Spreading contact over two lines helps some people. It's still the band doing the carrying.
  • Long bra straps — if you're tall through the torso, standard straps run out of adjustment before the cup sits where it should. Look for extended-length or fully adjustable straps rather than yanking short ones tight, which just recreates the problem above.
  • Racerback and strapless — the straps move inward or vanish entirely. With no straps at all, 100% of the work falls to the band, which is exactly why a strapless bra has to be fitted firmer than your usual.

What is the underwire?

The underwire is the semi-rigid wire — usually metal, sometimes moulded plastic — sewn into a soft channel along the bottom edge of each cup. It doesn't lift you by itself. It gives the cup a fixed shape and transfers weight sideways and downwards into the cradle and band, which is where the load belongs.

Here's the easiest way to see why a wire misbehaves: it's the wrong-size shoe. A shoe that rubs a blister isn't a cruel shoe, it's the wrong length or width for your foot. Same with a wire. A wire that pokes is almost never a defective wire.

What it looks like when it's working: the wire sits on your ribcage all the way round, following the crease under your breast, with no tissue trapped underneath it and nothing spilling over it at the side. You should be able to forget it's there.

What goes wrong: the cup is too small, so tissue pushes the wire off its track and up onto breast tissue. Or the wire is too narrow or too wide for your breast root — which is why the last section of this article exists. One thing to put to bed while we're here: there is no credible evidence that underwire causes breast cancer. That's a long-debunked myth. Wireless is a comfort and style preference, not a safety decision.

What are bra wings and the back of a bra?

The wings are the side panels that run from the outer edge of each cup, along your ribs, to the closure. Together with the front, they are the band — "wing" just names the section between the cup and the hooks. Ask what the back of a bra is called and this is the answer: the wings, plus the hook-and-eye closure.

What it looks like when it's working: the wing lies flat against your ribs with no gap along its top edge, and the whole thing sits level with the front. Bra backs come in a few shapes, and each does something slightly different:

  • Straight back — the most common; the band runs horizontally across.
  • U-shaped or leotard back — the band dips lower between the shoulder blades. Lower means more of your torso is doing the anchoring, which is steadier.
  • Racerback — the straps converge between the shoulder blades. Excellent at stopping strap slip, less adjustable.
  • Wide wing bra — a taller side panel, often 9 cm or more from wire to top edge. It spreads pressure over more skin and smooths the transition at the underarm instead of cutting a line into it.

What goes wrong: a narrow wing on a heavier bust concentrates force into a thin strip, which is what people mean when they say a bra "cuts in" at the side, or that the bra backside rolls. A wing that gapes at the top is too tall or too stiff for your shape. And any wing that has lost its elasticity has effectively stopped working, however good it still looks. What is the cradle?

The cradle is the frame at the front of the bra, underneath and around the cups, that holds the underwire channels and joins the cups to the wings and the gore. On many bras it's a separate strip of firm, non-stretch fabric; on some soft or moulded styles it's absent altogether and the cups attach straight to the band.

Think of it as the tray the cups sit in. Its job is to stay still. Everything else moves a little — the stretchy band elastic, the soft cup fabric, the give in the straps. The cradle doesn't, and that stillness is what stops the wires from wandering.

What it looks like when it's working: invisible. It lies flat against your ribcage, the wires sit quietly in their channels, and the front of the bra feels like one piece rather than several.

What goes wrong: on a bra that's too small, the cradle buckles or lifts away from the body at the sides, taking the wires with it. On a worn-out bra, the channel softens and the wire starts to shift inside it. If the front of your bra feels like it's flexing and tilting rather than sitting still, the cradle is telling you the size is wrong before anything else does.

What is the apex of a bra?

The apex is the point where the strap meets the top of the cup — and on most bras it also marks the fullest, most projected part of the cup. It's a small detail that quietly decides whether a style suits you.

Here's why it matters. The strap pulls upward from wherever the apex sits. If the apex is directly above the fullest part of your breast, the pull is vertical and the cup stays put. If it sits too far to the outside, the strap drags the cup sideways and slides off your shoulder. Too far inside, and it pulls tissue toward the centre while the outer edge gapes.

What it looks like when it's working: the strap runs in a straight line from the apex over your shoulder without needing to be tightened to stay on. The cup's fullest point sits at roughly nipple level, not above or below it.

What goes wrong: gaping at the top outer corner of the cup, or a strap that will not stay on no matter how short you make it, is very often an apex placement mismatch rather than a sizing mistake.

What is a high apex bra?

A high apex bra places that junction higher up the cup, producing a taller, more triangular shape — you'll sometimes see these sold as triangle bras. High apex styles suit breasts that are full on top: tissue sitting high in the cup needs fabric up there to contain it, and a low, scooped balconette will simply cut across it.

The reverse is just as useful to know. If you're full on the bottom and empty above, a high apex cup leaves a gap at the top that no amount of strap-tightening will close. That gap isn't a sizing failure. It's a shape mismatch, and the answer is a lower apex — a balconette or half-cup — not a smaller cup.

What is the hook-and-eye closure?

The hook-and-eye closure is the fastening at the end of the wings: metal hooks on one side, loops on the other, usually in two or three columns. Its purpose isn't decoration, and it isn't just getting the bra on. It exists because elastic relaxes with wear, and the closure lets you take the band in as that happens.

That gives you one genuinely useful buying rule.

Quick test: a new bra should fit properly on the loosest hook. That way you have two more rows in reserve as the elastic softens over the coming months. If a new bra only feels right on the tightest hook, the band is already too big for you — take the size down instead, and use a sister size to keep the cup volume the same.

What it looks like when it's working: the hooks sit level, the band is even across your back, and the closure lies flat rather than folding or twisting.

What goes wrong: you've reached the tightest hook and the band still rides up. There's nothing left to tighten, which means the bra has reached the end of its working life. Most bras last roughly 6–12 months of regular wear before the elastic is too far gone to support, so that's a replacement, not a repair. Wider closures with three or four columns of hooks are common on larger sizes for a reason: more hooks spread the tension and stop the band folding into a rope.

What is the breast root?

Here's the part that isn't on the bra at all — and the one most anatomy guides skip entirely, which is a shame, because it explains more mystery fit problems than anything else on this page.

Your breast root is the outline where breast tissue attaches to your chest wall. Think of it as a footprint: the same volume of tissue can sit on a small footprint and project forward, or spread across a wide one and sit shallower. Roots vary enormously — some are barely 5 cm across, others reach from the breastbone all the way into the underarm.

Why it matters: an underwire has to match your root, not your cup size. Wire width is decided by the manufacturer for each size, and different brands cut them differently. That's the real reason two bras in the identical size can feel like completely different garments on you.

What goes wrong: if the wire is narrower than your root, it sits on breast tissue instead of behind it — you get an ache along the wire line and tissue squeezed out at the side. If the wire is wider than your root, it lands past your tissue on the ribs and jabs into your underarm, and you'll see empty cup at the outer edge.

Wide breast root vs narrow breast root

You can get a rough read on your own in about thirty seconds. Lift one breast and feel along the underside with your fingertips, from the centre of your chest outward, until the soft tissue stops and you're clearly on rib. Do the same at the inner edge. The distance between those two points is roughly your root width.

One honest caveat: brands almost never publish wire widths, so this is trial and error. What it buys you is a much better question in the fitting room. Instead of "is this my size?", you're asking "is this wire the right width for me?"
